As I write this, my family is getting ready for our annual summer vacation. This year we are visiting beautiful Maine. Like many of you, I’ve been making lists, packing bags, and counting down the days until we can unplug for a little while. After a summer so far filled with track meets and soccer tournaments, we are more than ready for a little rest and relaxation.
Vacation always reminds me why I love what I do.
Yes, I love teaching Pilates. I love helping people get stronger and move with less pain. But at the end of the day, those things aren’t the only goal. They’re the tools that allow us to fully experience our lives.
We don’t exercise just to exercise.
We exercise so we can hike the trail without worrying if our knees will make it. So we can carry our suitcase up a flight of stairs without throwing our back out. So we can chase our kids or grandkids, paddle a kayak, walk through a new city for hours, or simply wake up feeling capable and confident in our own bodies.
Movement gives us freedom.
This year has been a good reminder of that for me personally After dealing with hip pain for months, I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on strength, mobility, and making smart adjustments to my workouts It hasn’t always been easy, and it certainly hasn’t looked perfect But the work I’ve put in means I can still enjoy the activities I love—including exploring a beautiful national park with my family this month.
That’s what fitness is really about.
It’s not about having the “perfect” body or never missing a workout It’s about building a body that supports the life you want to live.
Whether your adventures are across the country or simply around the block, every workout is an investment in future memories Every time you choose to move, you’re making it a little easier to say “yes” to the moments that matter most.
So wherever this summer takes you, I hope you enjoy every step, every hike, every walk on the beach, every bike ride, and every memory you create.
When you get home, your Pilates practice will still be here waiting for you But while you’re away, don’t forget that all of those experiences are exactly what your practice has been preparing you for.
Have a wonderful August, and happy moving!
